There’s a common misconception about Tarot, that it’s a tool for fortune telling, a party trick, a deck of cards that predicts what’s coming next.
Tarot is so much more than that.
More Than Divination
The Tarot is a living tradition. It has moved through centuries of hands, minds, and cultures, gathering meaning as it travelled, from its earliest incarnations as a card game in Renaissance Italy, through the esoteric revival of the 18th and 19th centuries, into the archetypal, psychologically rich system we know today.
It is not static or fixed. Like any living tradition, it breathes, impressed by every reader, every question asked, every soul who sits with the cards and asks them to speak.
A Mirror, Not a Fortune Teller
The real magic of Tarot isn’t in predicting your future. It’s in reflecting your present, with a clarity and depth that few other tools can offer.
Each card is layered with symbols, and symbols speak a language older than words. They bypass the analytical mind and speak directly to something deeper, the unconscious, the intuitive, the part of us that already knows the answer.
When you lay out a Tarot spread, you’re not asking the cards to tell you something foreign. You’re asking them to help you see what you already carry, your patterns, your fears, your gifts, your blind spots, your becoming. This is the same intuitive language I lean on in mediumship work too, reading spirit through the six clairsenses draws on that same trust in symbol and sensation.
Archetypes, Numerology, and the Four Elements
Every card in the Tarot carries layers of meaning, woven together from several ancient systems of wisdom:
Archetypes — the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess, the Empress are not just characters. They are universal patterns of human experience, the same figures that appear again and again across mythology, religion, and story, because they represent something true about what it means to be human.
Numerology gives each card a deeper resonance, the Aces bursting with pure potential, the Tens marking completion and culmination, each number in between tracing a stage in life’s unfolding cycles.
The four elements — fire, water, air, and earth, map onto the four suits, grounding the Tarot’s wisdom in the same elemental forces that have shaped spiritual and philosophical thought for thousands of years. Wands and their fire: passion, creativity, will. Cups and their water: emotion, intuition, relationship. Swords and their air: thought, conflict, clarity. Pentacles and their earth: body, resource, the material world.
Together, these layers make the Tarot a complete symbolic language, one capable of speaking to nearly any human experience, in a form specific enough to feel personal, and universal enough to feel true.
Your Soul’s Journey, Told in Cards
At its heart, the Tarot’s Major Arcana traces something remarkable… a complete arc of the soul’s journey, from the innocence and potential of the Fool at the very beginning, through trials, awakenings, losses, and revelations, to the wholeness and integration of the World at the end.
This isn’t a story that happens once. It’s a cycle we move through again and again, in different forms, at different scales, throughout a lifetime. The Tarot doesn’t just tell this story, it helps you recognise where you are within it, right now.
This is what I mean when I say the Tarot reflects our personal mythology. It’s not superstition. It’s a framework for understanding the deeper narrative of a life, the one beneath the surface of daily events, the one made of growth, loss, initiation, and return. It’s a thread I’ve followed since I was fifteen, long before I understood where it would lead me.
